As a scholar and an author, I have been writing books, monographs, and essays in the past few decades. In the spring of 1990, to commemorate my 60th birthday, a complete bibliography of my writings from 1950 to 1989 (Chuokoron Jigyou Syuppann 237 pages), which included some 5,000 entries, was published. For obvious reasons, most of them were in Japanese, and they are accessible in major libraries for those who wish to read or to use.

However, my writings in English, which count over 150, are scattered elsewhere and some of them are "fugitive" in nature. At the same time, I was asked by my colleagues if I had offprints or extra copies of these writings. In this connection, I decided to compile some of my major works in this form so that I can respond to the interests and requests from overseas.

The topics dealt with in this volume are divided into four parts, reflecting my diverse interests, and some of the figures and data are obsolete as they have been already withered by time. But I hope that the readers will "read" not only what is written but also the temporal context in which these words were composed. It should be added also that the style of each monograph is different, because there were many editors who worked on my writings in the past. Such lack of uniformity, however, will not make much inconvenience on the part of readers. I admire and particularly wish to thank to all editors, mostly in Japan and the United States.

For the publication of this collection, I must express my sincere thanks to my family, my colleagues and staff of this Institute. I appreciate devoted assistance given by my secretaries, especially Kimiko Nishimoto.
